Authenticity in the Anthropocene

The video shows a small plastic bag with black dust inside. Next, artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde explains how that dust – carbon particles collected from the filters of a huge air purifier set in a park in Rotterdam – is compressed into little diamonds, attached to rings and sent off to their new owners. The diamonds are part of Studio Roosegaarde’s Smog Free Project, an initiative set to clean the air in urban environments. The diamond rings are given to individual funders of the project in exchange for their support for the project.

The diamonds are tokens of clean air. By buying a ring you donate 1000 m3 of clean air to the city where the Smog Free Tower, the huge air purifier, is located. They may also represent a material future of the Anthropocene, where human impact on the Earth is so vast that we have become a force forming nature. Besides smog, also beach trash, city rubble, livestock fossils and ocean plastic waste may be the authentic, natural materials of the future. // Read more
