L'énergie joue un rôle essentiel dans notre société, quel que soit le secteur économique concerné. Elle dépend actuellement à plus de 80 % de combustibles fossiles : pétrole, gaz naturel et charbon. Ces ressources sont finies ce qui entraîne un risque de pénurie à terme, susceptible de provoquer une crise économique majeure, et en tout cas, conduisant à une hausse durable des prix. L'utilisation de l'énergie a un impact sur l'environnement qui ne cesse de grandir, notamment avec un risque pour certaines sources, d'induire un changement climatique ayant des conséquences fâcheuses pour l'humanité.

Les évolutions en matière d'énergie demandent du temps et nous en avons peu pour infléchir la manière dont on consomme celle-ci.

Face à une montée rapide des périls, la nécessité de concilier énergie et développement durable apparaît plus que jamais comme un besoin essentiel, comme l'ont montré les discussions récentes autour du "Grenelle de l'Environnement".

Il est donc apparu opportun, pour compléter les réflexions existantes, de mettre en place une structure de réflexion spécifique pour mener une réflexion approfondie dans les domaines de l'Innovation, du Développement durable, de l'Énergie, de l'Environnement et de la Société, c'est l'objet du Think tank IDées.

Why "DESIGN ME A PLANET"

After thirty glorious years crashing in the late 70s on the first oil shock, we had 30 years during which we have sunk deeper and deeper into economic, social and ecological crisis. Economic demography stumbles because we are already on the limits of the planet. We know this, in part, because social inequalities are now back to what they were in the nineteenth century. Also, the ecology has undermined biodiversity and accelerated global warming. Right in the desire to free all, the initiative remains locked in a neoliberal stance too insensitive to social dislocation and ecological crisis. We cling to growth in developed economies as the sole engine of development without offering a real solution for the economic and social crisis.

The Left has embraced the struggles of minorities towards more freedom, but left to disintegrate the old social contract without proposing a new one. The middle class emerges today impoverished, while misery engulfs the poorest. Environmentalists for thirty years have continued to warn people about the risks of industrial development and the intrinsic limits of the planet. Defenders of endangered species have some difficulties to propose an economic and social project credible, exciting and compelling for humans! The growing importance of real environmental problems, while giving them a renewed legitimacy, has faced increasing shortcomings in terms of societal projects.

Saloff-Coste is recognized in Europe, America, and Asia as a vanguard artist, global futurist, business adviser, and entrepreneur as he seeks to discover the technological, economic, social, and ecological processes related to the passage of the "Industrial Society" to the "Information Society."


From 1985 to 1987, he directed a permanent multidisciplinary workshop on societal change at France's Ministry of Research.
